WE’VE BEEN RAISING CHICKENS FOR…
30 years
WE LOVE OUR JOB MOST BECAUSE…

“Our nine-year-old daughter has been going into the barn since she could watch what we do. Along with seeing your children grow, there’s no better way to teach values: that farming is a group effort, that we must respect our animals and the environment, and that we must problem-solve together. Often, there’s nothing we can just buy from a store to fix a problem. It might be 3:00 a.m., and we’ve got to find a way to make things work, because it’s a matter of survival for the birds. They are counting on us to do the right things.”

PEOPLE ARE MOST SURPRISED ABOUT…
“The amount of feed it takes to raise chickens.”
LIFE ON THE FARM IS…
“There really is no typical day on the farm [both laugh]. We check on the chickens right away in the morning, and then before dinner time. Of course, we have barn alarms that alert us to any potential problems, which usually go off in the middle of the night!”

WE LOVE OUR JOB MOST BECAUSE…

“We like the steady career part of it, and that it’s not up and down. It’s rewarding and fun to start a new flock, put the quality and work into it, and then get recognized for quality results. We’ve also hired outside people who have had other jobs, and they find that days go by quickly on the farm, with a variety of things to do. We feel like we’re making a positive difference, and it makes us feel proud about what we do.”

PEOPLE ARE MOST SURPRISED ABOUT…

“With the number of chickens, we raise each year, we’re still ‘small potatoes.’”

LIFE ON THE FARM IS…

“More than a full-time job, it’s a life. When it comes to raising chickens, getting them off to a great start is like planting flowers. If you don’t get things right from the beginning, it’s going to take a lot more work to get them back on track. You’ve got to have an eye and heart for it.”

OUR FAMILY’S FAVORITE WAY TO MAKE AND SERVE CHICKEN IS…

“We enjoy grilling as a family. Every summer, a number of us grills and serves chicken at Broiler Dairy Days in Arcadia, Wisconsin. It’s one of the largest chicken pits in the United States. We also have a family favorite White Chicken Chili Recipe.”

WHO DO YOU FARM WITH?

While a fifth-generation farm operation, there are now four generations on the ground. Both Tom’s son and daughter have joined Tom, his brother, two nephews, and brother’s son-in-law in their farming operation. Collectively, they grow soybeans, hay, and corn. In addition, they have modern finishing sites for swine production, provide custom feeding of hogs, and work two broiler chicken barns, which were built in 2016 and 2017. While they divide and conquer, they also come together to help each other out when needed, especially when new chicks arrive.

PEOPLE ARE MOST SURPRISED ABOUT…

“When people find out what I do, they have a lot of questions. They’re amazed when I tell them I raise 100,000 chickens at a time and have six flocks a year. And they’re surprised at how quickly chickens reach market weight.”

I WISH PEOPLE KNEW…

“I wish consumers would keep in mind that I’m a consumer, myself, and I may consume the products I raise or grow. As farmers, we don’t want to raise something that’s unsafe or unhealthy. This applies not only to chicken but farming in general. Farmers want to produce good, healthy, safe products—ones we’d proudly put on our own tables.”

OUR FAMILY’S FAVORITE WAY TO MAKE AND SERVE CHICKEN IS…

“I like my meats! While my favorite animal protein is beef, and I eat a lot of pork, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to be healthier and eat in appropriate quantities. So, I eat chicken regularly, which is a clean, healthy protein. I really enjoy heart healthy recipes. My favorite chicken recipe is “Peanut Chicken Zoodles,” which is made with Zucchini noodles. I tend to like anything with spice and heat, especially when it comes to chicken.”
